What are the side effects of Norocillin (Penicillin G Procaine Injectable Solution)?
Like any antibiotic, this drug can cause nonscusceptible organism overgrowth, including fungi. Development of new symptoms or a lack of response could indicate that such an overgrowth has occurred. If you believe this to be true, consult a veterinarian. Anaphylactic or allergic reactions, including fatal reactions, could occur in animals with hypersensitivity to procaine or penicillin. These reactions can be sudden and vary in severity. Animals treated with this drug should be closely observed for at least 30 minutes after treatment. If signs of an anaphylactic or allergic reaction are noted, withdraw use and seek veterinary treatment. In case of severe respiratory distress, immediate injection of an antihistamine or epinephrine (according to the manufacturer's directions) may be required.
What special precautions are there?
Avoid administering penicillin and bacteriostatic drugs (including tetracyclines) concomitantly. Intramuscular administration in swine, sheep, or cattle can cause local reactions of the tissue lasting beyond the indicated 14-day withdrawal period of cattle, 7-day period of swine, and 9-day period of sheep. This can cause edible tissue trim loss at the time of slaughter. Keep out of reach of animals and children.
What to do if overdose?
In case of overdose, contact your nearest veternarian or pet hospital.
How can I store Norocillin (Penicillin G Procaine Injectable Solution)?
Norocillin should be stored between 2 to 8°C (36 to 46°F). Use within 60 days of first puncture and puncture a maximum of 100 times. 250 and 500 mL vials: If using a needle or draw-off spike larger than 16 gauge, discard any remaining product immediately after use.
Overview
Use a sterile, thoroughly cleaned syringe and needle for every injection. Syringes and needles can be sterilized by boiling for 15 minutes in water. Prior to withdrawal, disinfect the rubber cap on the solution bottle using 70% alcohol. Similarly disinfect the injection site with alcohol. Warm the vial to room temperature and thoroughly shake for suspension uniformity. To administer in livestock, direct a 1" to 1.5", 16-gauge to 18-gauge needle into the fleshy portion of a thick muscle, like the thigh, hip, or rump region. Do not inject into a major nerve or blood vessel. Prior to injection, gently pull back on the syringe plunger. If blood begins to enter the syringe, a blood vessel has been punctured. In such cases, the needle should be withdrawn and an alternative injection site should be selected. Intramuscularly administer a daily dose of 3,000 units for every pound of body weight (1mL for every 100 pounds). Continuing treating the animal daily until recovery is evident, and for a minimum of 1 day after symptom disappearance (typically 2 to 3 days later). Never inject a dose greater than 10mL in a single site. For every treatment, rotate injection sites. Do not treat for more than 4 days in a row.
